Primary Care in the Bronx

Primary care is the foundation of a healthy life. It is the place where prevention begins, where chronic conditions are managed before they become crises, and where you build a relationship with a provider who knows you as a person — not just a patient chart.

At Mace Avenue Medical, we have been delivering primary care to the East Bronx community for over 75 years. Whether you need a routine physical, help managing a long-term condition, or a sick visit for something unexpected, we are here for you — in person at 2460 Mickle Ave, or virtually through our telehealth service.

What Is Primary Care?

Primary care is the broad-spectrum, first-contact medical care provided by a physician or advanced practice provider who manages the full range of your health needs. Your primary care provider (PCP) is your medical home — the clinician who coordinates your care, manages your ongoing conditions, orders your preventive screenings, and connects you to specialists when needed.

A good primary care relationship means your provider knows:

  • Your complete health history
  • Your family history and risk factors
  • Your current medications and how they interact
  • Your lifestyle, goals, and health concerns
  • What screenings and vaccines you are due for

This continuity of knowledge is what makes primary care so powerful — and why choosing the right practice matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does a primary care doctor do?

A primary care doctor manages your overall health — conducting physical exams, diagnosing and treating common illnesses and chronic conditions, ordering preventive screenings, prescribing medications, and referring you to specialists when needed. They serve as your medical home and health advocate.

  • How often should I see my primary care doctor?

Most adults should see their primary care provider at least once a year for a preventive wellness visit. If you have chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension, more frequent visits — typically every 3 to 6 months — are recommended. Your provider will advise you on the right schedule for your health needs.

  • Do I need a referral to see a specialist through Mace Avenue Medical?

Depending on your insurance plan, a referral from your primary care provider may be required before seeing a specialist. Our team handles referral coordination and will walk you through the process.

  • What is the difference between an M.D. and a D.O. in primary care?

Both M.D.s (Medical Doctors) and D.O.s (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine) are fully licensed physicians who complete comparable medical training. D.O.s have additional coursework in the musculoskeletal system and take a whole-body approach to health. Both are highly qualified primary care providers.

  • Can I see a Nurse Practitioner for primary care?

Yes. Our Nurse Practitioners and Doctor of Nurse Practice are fully qualified to manage primary care needs, including diagnosing conditions, prescribing medications, and developing care plans. All of our NPs trained at Columbia University School of Nursing.
